The Last Ever Speedway Race

This race has been a staple of the Victoria road scene forever, but with the sale of the speedway land for development this is the last year for the speedway and this was the last race for us. Tripleshot organizes the race and they wanted to make this one extra special. They had a new location for the start/finish and they introduced prime laps.

This week I was only racing the A race. The C and B races were huge the biggest groups I had ever seen. The A race was also a large turnout and it got off to a quick start. Right away a 2 person breakaway went clear and the chase was on. The Wheelers had the biggest team there and controlled the race sending different riders on the attack one after the other. A two-rider break made it more than halfway around the lap before we got organized to bring them back.

I got to do a little bit of everything, I chased, I made a break, I went solo, and I almost got dropped. As we entered the final stages of the race I decided that I was going to sit in and work on staying on Wheeler’s sprinter, Logan’s wheel. I was here about 3 laps when we came down the front stretch and I moved aside to miss the small cone that marked the pothole. Unfortunately, someone had slightly bumped the cone on a previous lap and I hit the pothole directly in the middle. Immediately I heard the sound of stans sealant being sprayed all over me and my bike. I didn’t hit my brakes but allowed the speed to come down while keeping my weight back until I was clear of the group.

It was disappointing not finishing the race especially because it was my first A only race and it was the last chance to race the course. I felt pretty good and had some legs left so it would have been nice to see it all play out. I gained some experience and lived another day. Unfortunately sometimes that’s bike racing.
